The Descriptions dialog may help to automatically create the descriptions for folders and files already during the disk scan. If the disk you’re scanning contains the files like “file_id.diz”, “files.bbs”, “index.txt” etc., those files will be analysed and used as comments for the corresponding files/folders:
The default files for folder descriptions are:
file_id.diz dirinfo
These files usually contain multi-line descriptions of folders where they’re located.
The default files for folder/file descriptions are:
descript.ion files.bbs catalog.txt index.txt index .index 00_index.txt 00index.txt 0index.txt
The files listed above (used for folder/file descriptions) has the following format:
file1-name Description of file 1 (line 1) Description of file 1 (line 2) … Description of file 1 (line N) file2-name Description of file 2 (line 1) Description of file 2 (line 2) … Description of file 2 (line M) …
As shown above, each description may contain one or more lines of text. Here is an example (files.bbs):
GOO1.ZIP Kai`s Power GOO + Fusion [Final Standalone] (c) MetaTools [disk 1 of 3] GOO2.ZIP Kai`s Power GOO + Fusion [Final Standalone] (c) MetaTools [disk 2 of 3] GOO3.ZIP Kai`s Power GOO + Fusion [Final Standalone] (c) MetaTools [disk 3 of 3] README General information about the GOO package "My comments.txt" My comments about this software
So, if such file will be located in the same directory as “GOO1.ZIP” and other files, the following descriptions will be created:
For README:
General information about the GOO package
For "My comments.txt":
My comments about this software
For GOO1.ZIP:
Kai`s Power GOO + Fusion [Final Standalone] (c) MetaTools [disk 1 of 3]
And so on for GOO2.ZIP and GOO3.ZIP.
The file name may be enclosed in quotes, as for "My comments.txt" in the above example.
If you feel that these lists are not complete, you can create your own ones. Just select the Use the following files option(s) and fill the box (using Add button) with the file names of your choice (up to 32). For folder descriptions, you can ever specify the mask of files to extract the descriptions from, e.g. “*.nfo” (without quotes); in this case, the program will search for such files and analyse the first one which will match the mask.
At the moment, there is no way to specify the “priority” (or order) for the files to be analysed; just first of ones matched will be used. In most cases, it is enough to have the default files there.
Please note that descriptions are limited to 4K (4096 bytes); that’s done for performance reasons (and also to keep the database as compact as possible). If the file, which contains the description (such as file_id.diz”), is longer, the program will use first 4096 bytes only.
If the description files are created in DOS (that’s usual, for example, for “files.bbs”), we recommend you to enable the Convert descriptions from OEM to ANSI option.
The next option – Extract module descriptions – instructs ADC to extract the description and version number from Windows modules (EXE, DLL, VBX, OCX and VXD). For example, for the standard wsock32.dll file (located in your Windows System folder) the following description will be generated:
BSD Socket API for Windows 4.00.1114
Note: extracting the description and version number from Windows module is a very time-consuming operation, especially when you scan the Windows or System folder with a lot of executable files. So, use it with care.
The Extract descriptions from audio files option allows you to get some techinical info from WAV (Microsoft Sound), MP3, WMA (Windows Media) and OGG Vorbis files. For MP3, WMA and OGG files, description tags (ID3 v1, v1.1 and v2 for MP3) are also extracted, so the descriptions may look like:
Govi - Magellan's beat (05:42) Album: Guitar odyssey Genre: New Age MPEG 1.0 layer 3, 128 kbit, 44100 Hz, Stereo
Where the first line contains artist and album name, and track length (seconds:minutes).
The last option – Extract descriptions from documents – instructs ADC to extract some information from the following files:
